Internet Explorer 9 Beta

IE9

Internet explorer 9 is expected to be released sometime in September (beta version). Better performance and improved Acid3 test scores are expected.

Microsoft has been delivering developer preview versions of IE9 every eight weeks since the product was announced at MIX10 in March. The product enables developers to use the same CSS, HTML and other web technologies to take advantage of PC hardware. The most recent preview added support for W3C standards including HTML5 <audio>, <video> and <canvas> elements, the Web Open Font Format (WOFF) and many other new and improved capabilities.

The preview has been downloaded by 2 million users and over 16 million page views to the IE Test Drive Site have been made.

Developers should download the latest Platform Preview. Once you download, check out the speed demos and HTML demos on the Test Drive Page.

Trace precedents in excel 2010

In this short blog, i will explain trace precedents feature of microsoft excel 2010.

let me explain what is the purpose of this. it tells what other cells affect the value of currently selected cell.

lets explain it through images.

write any two numbers in the cells, and take there sum in another cell. Select the Sum cell and go to the formulas tab, click Trace Precedents (highlighted in the picture) and it will make a line from formula cell to the dependent cells.

Signature in excel 2010

In this blog, i will explain how to digitally sign your excel sheets.

by this feature, sheets get locked, and further editing is not allowed.

lets take a drive.

Open Microsoft excel 2010 and and go to the Insert tab on the ribbon control (in case you don’t know what ribbon is, ribbon is the name given to the area right below the tool bar where different icons are displayed, it would be hard to digest this if you have been working on office 2003, but believe me, you just have to explore it once, and it will be much easier to play it around).

Click on Signature Line and click Microsoft office signature line

Click OK at the following notification, the other option would take you to the microsoft digital id’s site (more on it in the next blog).

After clicking OK, following box will appear, fill in the necessary information.

Click OK, and following signature will occur. However, the process is not complete, its not digitally signed.

Now lets digitally sign it, right click on this signature

Click on Sign, following box will appear, just click on OK, we will describe the other option in one of our next blogs about signature services from office market place. It will then ask you to save the workbook.

After saving it, you need to digitally sign it, either type your name or select any image file that depicts your signature.

i am typing it in.

Click Sign, and following acknowledgement is received.

Click Okay. File is digitally signed. Now you cannot edit it. If you want to edit it, there would be a notification coming at the top Edit Anyway.

Click it.

However, doing this, will loose the signature, and it needs to be signed again.

Name manager in excel 2010

In this blog, i will explain the feature of Name manager in excel 2010.

Its like giving friendly names to cell or cells (when formula is applied) for easy referencing in other formulas.

So lets do it.

Go to the Formulas tab and locate Name Manager Icon, see below image

Enter any value in one of the cells and then click Name Manager. Following image will appear

Click on New, give a name, check the values in the scope, it includes, the whole workbook and all sheet names, so decide yourself what should be the scope your Name. Click OK.

After clicking OK, following image will appear. This dialog box maintains all the names currently used. It is a sort of admin panel from where you can insert/delete/edit them.

Okay, lets test this feature now. go to any cell and write =nadeem it will show 6 over there

try out something like =nadeem + nadeem it will show 12.

So this is it. Its very simple and very handy feature. Can easily be used in other formulas. Try experimenting it further and you will find it great.

SIRI – Iphone app

Apple is running after an Iphone application called SIRI, a personal digital assistant. Whether you want to know weather forecasts, sports updates, etc you just have to talk to SIRI and information will be provided. It now only provides an interface to type into Iphone, infact one can play around with this application through voice. Thats the beauty of this application thats making it universal. Imagine you are driving along a street, and you need to know the nearest chinese restaurant, you just have to ask SIRI, and you will be given the answer.

Although, the recommendations by the application are not always 100% correct, but it learns with the passage of time with some high level data mining algorithms.

Windows phone 7 developer tools CTP

Microsoft has just released an updated version of its existing Windows phone 7 developer tools CTP that was announced in MIX conference in March. With new release, developers can now build windows phone 7 applications on the final release of visual studio 2010. This is refresh is available at http://developer.windowsphone.com.

New and changed features in the latest CTP are as followed.

  • Pause/Resume events are now supported
  • Non admin users can also now deploy the emulator even if the tools are installed as the admin user.
  • A problem with incremental deployment of projects has been fixed.
  • A problem resulting in the error “Connection failed because of invalid command-line arguments” being displayed during project creation has been fixed.
  • Design time skin refresh issues have been addressed.
  • A problem where the Windows Phone node was not appearing in VS 2010 on non-system drives has been fixed.

Iphone 4G launch

On June 7, apple’s Iphone 4G is expected to launch. Steve Jobs is due to make the key note address at Apple’s annual worldwide Developers Conference in San Fransico.

Uptill now, apple has sold around 8.75 million smart phones in last quarter. The only carrier being AT&T, analysts predict that by 2011,

apple’s second mobile phone carrier would be Verizon.

No Mac App Store

Just like iPhone app store, apple fans have been anticipating a similar thing for Mac OS X, but to utter surprise, nothing like that is in pipe line.

Apple’s CEO steve jobs replied NOPE to a Mac software developer, Fernando Valente when he inquired about upcoming Mac store. He emailed the Apple CEO questioning him on whether or not such a service would become a reality. After the email was sent, Valente, like many others, was not expecting a response. But much to his surprise only a few hours after sending it, he received one. The email from Steve Jobs was brief and to the point, simply stating that “nope,” no such service is on the way.

It has been a widespread rumor in forums that whether apple would be launching any thing like app store for its Mac OS. Now it has been confirmed that nothing like that is going to happen.
