First create any site which you would like to be used a template open it in SharePoint designer 2010, make changes accordingly now you just need to save it as a reusable package (.wsp) which is a SharePoint template extension and future sites created would be using this.
The following steps will show you how to create template from a SharePoint site:-
1. In SharePoint Designer 2010, click the SharePoint Designer Lab Site link in the navigation pane to open the Summary View for the site.
2. In the Ribbon, click Save as Template. A new browser window will open and you will be redirected to the Save as Template page. If you are prompted for credentials, log in with your Id and Password.
3. Supply the following values for the template:-
Use the following values for the template:
a. File Name: <<File Name>>
b. Template Name: <<Name>>
c. Template Description: <<Description>>
d. Included Content: Checked
4. Click OK to continue.
5. When the Operations Completed Successfully page appears, click OK. It may take a minute for the operation to complete.
6. Click Site Actions > New Site
ONLY FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING STEPS IF YOUR SITE IS NOT SHOWN IN THE TEMPLATES GALLERY, IF ITS SHOWN YOU ARE DONE AND NOT REQUIRED TO ACTIVATE IT!!!!
7. Look at the available templates and notice how your new site template is not an available to option. This is because the template has not been activated in this site collection.
8. Cancel the creation by clicking Cancel
9. Click Site Actions and select Site Settings
10. Click Solutions under the Galleries header.
11. Your new template is shown an option in the Solutions list. Site templates are stored as solution packages to the site collection sandboxed solutions list. You can manage which solutions are available and activated for the end users here.
12. Hover over the solution, click the dropdown arrow that appears, then select Activate.
13. In the Solution Gallery – Activate Solution window, click the Activate button in the Ribbon.
a. Notice that the Solution Title and Description are the same as you entered during the template creation
b. Notice that after the activation is complete, the status of the solution has been changed to “Activated.”
14. Now, click Site Actions and select New Site
15. Click on the Custom tab and notice that your new Site Template is now available as a site.
