Last year, more than 2,500+ students from Pakistan participated in this competition and team Magno Touch from University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore won the Pakistan finals and represented Pakistan in the global finals held in Warsaw, Poland.

Microsoft Corp announced the launch of the latest version of the world’s most-used browser with the release of Windows Internet Explorer 9 in 39 languages at an event at the SXSW Interactive conference. Internet Explorer 9 is Microsoft’s most-downloaded browser beta of all time, with more than 40 million downloads, and it has already has gained more than 2 percent usage on Windows 7. Improving Privacy and Security Online

Because the Web is increasingly less secure and private, Internet Explorer 9 is designed to be a trusted browser because it contains a robust set of built-in security, privacy and reliability technologies that keep customers safer online.

In December, Microsoft introduced Tracking Protection in Internet Explorer 9, which puts people in control of what data they are sharing as they move around the Web, by enabling consumers to indicate what websites they’d prefer not to exchange information with. Microsoft Pakistan launches Catalyst program for Entrepreneurs

Innovation and entrepreneurship is the backbone of the IT software industry. Microsoft believes that harnessing the power of ICT to support innovation helps people think differently and solve problems in ways that were never imagined before. Following the same lines Microsoft Pakistan in partnership with Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT & ITES (P@SHA) & The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) has started MIC Catalyst program in Pakistan to foster innovation by helping students & young entrepreneurs.

MIC Catalyst is a new and unique program designed to promote innovation in Pakistan ICT industry. The main idea behind this program is to facilitate transformation of high-potential students into successful businesses.

A panel of judges, comprising of Business and Technical experts will also be formulated for the evaluation of collected proposals. This evaluation will be performed from technical as well as business perspectives.

Similarly, for the mentoring phases of the program, students will be facilitated with ongoing guidance on their business plans and product developments for which they will need engagement of dedicated mentors. Just like the panel of judges, there will be two panels of mentors formulated to provide business mentoring as well as technical consultancy to these students.

The end result of the program is expected that each team should be transformed into a company with a complete business plan and a product.


It been like just two years when the PCs which ruled the world in communication & collaboration for more than 25 years have been replaced by a similar but compact device called laptops / notebooks. On the parallel side of the game feature phones which again were equally important for communication and collaboration amongst humans ruled the market for around more than a decade will be replaced in just a fraction of time from the similar but powerful devices knows as smart phones. Now on one side of the game you are exposed to the compact but equivalent versions of the PCs in form of Notebooks, Netbooks, Tablets etc but on the other side the facts and stats shows that the smartphone shipment and usage has not only eaten the market share of feature phones but also of the PC. So a PC make it a desktop, laptop or a fancy tablet at the end of next few years is supposed to be out of fashion and will be the 2nd choice of the consumer after the smartphone.

Because many of the reasons due which people used to carry a machine are now just satisfied through their handset in a much convenient and faster way. So that is the reason why we see the next war amongst principal technology vendors in on mobile rather than fighting back on desktop or server market share. Smart Phones replacing PCs in many scenarios are no longer today a dream and many gadgets powered by Nokia, RIM, Apple, Google and Microsoft are a true example of this proposition.

However a smart phone can’t completely replace a PC, I mean it, it can’t! Not even a more smarter phone as compared to it or others.. but if we need to prove this 1 = 1 then we can only bet on the smartest phone!

The call is tough everyone realizes it, if I look at the things a week ago then Nokia and RIM were producing the most balanced and powerful phones but again those could have only been categorized as smart ones or may be you can take RIM to smarter category but again for only a few models, Google was some where trying to be smarter but some how or the other was not fitting in to the category, Microsoft after WP7 actually just became smarter, earlier it was not even truly qualifying for smart ones. Apple was someone who was truly justifying the smarter criteria but was being pushed back again and again by the platform strength lied within the Android & WP7. Earlier the advantage which Google was getting was the success of its search engine, it doesn’t really mean that if you can do one thing well you will end up doing everything well. Microsoft had a shaky start because it was not able to make its mark since last many years as the previous versions of Windows Mobile didn’t do that well as they should have been. However times have changed it doesn’t really mean that if you didn’t do well in past you won’t do better in future.

So till day before yesterday the game was between the smart and smarter, but to actually replace the PC, to actually offer Cloud services, to actually bring the ultimate power to the handset we needed something smartest.

Microsoft and Nokia entered a partnership where the world’s strongest, most living, most efficient hardware from Nokia will run the worlds best Microsoft Platform and Services on it… Currently Nokia is leading and Microsoft is most heavily penetrating the smart phone market.

So, with this I will put my bet of the ever smartest phones on the planet on this partnership.

What’s new in IE9, Release Candidate (RC)

The Release Candidate of Internet Explorer 9, available now at in 40 languages.

With this Release Candidate Microsoft has added over a thousand new test cases for JavaScript and updated over fifty test cases based on community feedback. During IE9 development Microsoft has now submitted just under 4000 test cases in total for standards like HTML5. Microsoft has submitted these tests to the appropriate standards bodies for feedback and eventual inclusion in their official test suites.

It’s not only the Cloud, Microsoft CRM hits everywhere


Going through various articles and stats I would not agree that Microsoft CRM has hit the cloud, I belief it has hit every where. Not going into the discussion who holds major market share or what was missed from the CIOs technology priority list, let’s leave the marketing material behind and dive into the ground realities.

Your organization buys CRM solution to Acquire, Enhance & Retain customers, sales channels and relationships but what if the solution you opt for is not a product meant for business guys to use rather its for IT Pros or Engineers or you are riding a horse and someone else is curbing it, yes I am talking about product customization according to your industry segment or you realize that the solution is way expensive as compared to a better available alternative.

The above para was a food of thought to think in terms of User Experience (UX), cost benefit analysis, customization & management delivered by a CRM solution you buy to Acquire, Enhance & Retain customers, sales channels and relationships.

Despite the fact that Microsoft CRM 2011 has not fully launched and people have not started using it but out of these 6000+ relevant business users of CRM the highest number was with Microsoft and Salesforce landing pretty close. Imagine someone again running this survey down the road after 6 months and I am dead sure that the Microsoft percentage would even be much higher.,%22poll_id%22:112755%7D

Microsoft Online Family Safety Workshop in Pakistan


As a part of its social services commitment Microsoft Pakistan held an awareness workshop on Online Family Safety. The basis agenda of this workshop was to put an effort to keep children safe while they are online. To make this possible this workshop was targeted towards Teachers and Parents as they being the responsible for guiding children and ensuring their safety.

Various speakers from Industry addressed the Parents & Teachers during this half day long workshop where the main idea was to Act smart, Keep yourself updated with latest threats & their precautions, Understand the significance of online safety especially incase of children. Many ideas and viewpoints were shared by speakers and participants such as keeping the computer in living area or lounge so as everyone can see what the child is doing rather than leaving the machine with him/her in a bedroom or using the wired internet connection rather than Wi-Fi and much more.

All of the above resolutions makes sense and seem pretty appropriate however it really becomes difficult to stop consumer’s access to the technology or to change the way they are interacting with devices and again if you do so, workaround for such measures is quite easy and usually comes pretty quickly to the young minds (minds of digital natives) as compared to us.

However I came across a couple of Presentations from Microsoft in which they talked about their tools such as Windows 7 Parental Controls, Windows Live Online Family Safety 2011 & great security features part of latest browser IE9 – Beta. So this seems to be a one time effort by which you configured the child’s PC let’s say he/she can only log-in to the machine from 6 pm – 9 pm and only on Fri, Sat and Sun. May be he/she is only allowed to play these games online or to access these particular websites. At the end of the day you can easily see web based reports of your child’s activity. So no wonder you are travelling or busy in a meeting Microsoft Family Safety tools and Parental Controls are taking care of your child and loved ones.

The beauty of an automated solution is that it just take one time effort to be configured and later it is always there (24*7*365) and never makes Human Errors..!

Six Sigma & it’s certification in Pakistan

Six Sigma is a business management strategy in which defects reduce to 3.4 parts millions. In Six Sigma we minimize the defects in minimum cost, OR, it is a statically method to find the defects per million.

Six Sigma stands for Six Standard deviations from the arithmetic mean. It tells us how often defects are likely to occur. A defect may be thought of as anything that results in customer dissatisfaction. The higher the value of sigma, the lower the probability of a defect occurring. Six Sigma statically ensures that 99.99966% of all produced products in a process are of acceptable quality. According to above percentage of acceptable quality, if we are in 0.0 Sigma we have 933,133 defects in one million opportunities, in 1 Sigma we have 691,462 defects, and if we get 6 Sigma we have only 3.4 defects.

If any process fails to meet the criteria of given table, it is reanalyzed, altered and implemented. If no any improvement found than the process is reanalyzed, altered and again implemented. This cycle is continued until any improvement is seen. Once an improvement is found, it is documented and the knowledge is spread across other units in the company so they can implement this new process and reduce their defects.

Methodologies Use In Six Sigma:

There are two methodologies use in Six Sigma, depends on the life of process or product or a process or product which has to be implemented.

If any product or process is in existing state but not satisfying the user requirement then DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, Improve, control) is used.

If any product or process which is not exist, then DFSS (design for Six Sigma) OR a process or product which is exist but fails to achieve the desired sigma target( by using DMAIC or not), then DFSS is used.


Define: Define the problem that is affecting the quality, define customer suggestions and complains, define goal in Sigma level and define opportunities.

Measure: In this phase project team should make a detailed process map, detailed base line data and a calculation of baseline Sigma process.

Analyze: In analyze phase project team makes at least one confirmed hypothesis regarding the root causes of the problem the project aims to resolve.

Improve: The goal of this phase is to identify solution of the problem that the project’s aim to address. This involves in finding the different solutions, to test them and chose a solution, then evaluating the result of implemented solution.

Control: Object of this phase is to ensure that the gains obtained during improve phase are maintained long after the project has ended. To that end of life cycle it is necessary to standardize document procedures, make sure that all employees are trained and communicate the project result.


Define: Define the goal of project and customer requirement. Define that what the customer wants?

Measure: Determine and measure the customer needs and their specifications.

Analyze: According to customer requirement analyze different options of processes.

Design: Make detailing (design) of process, which fulfills the customer’s needs.

Verify: Verify and test the design, performance and ability to meet customer needs.

Implementation Roles:

One key factor of Six Sigma is to “professionalizing” the quality management process. There is some role hierarchy, by which Six Sigma is to be implemented in an organization or business.

Executive Leadership:

They are top level executives and hold primary responsibility for seeing the implementation of Six Sigma through start to finish (when goal is achieved). They are responsible for selections of project members and delegation their responsibilities.


They are members of upper management and selected by executive leaders. They are responsible for implementation of Six Sigma in the organization. It is responsibility of the champions to understand the principles of Six Sigma. They must act as a guide for implementation team because they are the first to obtain formal training or are hired before any other member of implementation team.

Master Black Belts:

Master Black Belts are chosen by champions to mentor the members having low role (black belt, green belt etc.). They are responsible for delivering the results of the projects that are being constructed. They must perform some statistical tasks to ensure the consistent application of Six Sigma throughout the entire organization. A Master Black Belt must have strong leadership skills.

Black Belts:

Black Belt is of middle management. They are responsible for executing the Six Sigma plan of action. They are technical than other members of team. Their job is to create, facilitate, train, and lead teams, with an analytical approach. They use statistical tools to lead other team members.

Green Belts:

They help Black Belts. They help Black Belt as part time, and they also do their own job, therefore they are not fully active in Six Sigma implementation.

Yellow Belts:

Everyone except Six Sigma implementation team (and in some cases throughout the whole organization) is yellow belts. They help green belts meet project goals and objectives as administrators, operations personnel.

Total Quality Management And Six Sigma:

Six Sigma and Total quality management both are used to reduce error or defects in a process, but goals and approaches are different. On the organization level these differences are given below.

Core Business:

Total Quality Management Six Sigma
It is not a part of business strategy. It is a strategy from the top of business process.
Quality controllers don’t include senior manager. Projects are carefully selected with managers accountables.


Total Quality Management Six Sigma
Its goal to improve each process of business. Its goal to minimize defects to 3.4 per opportunities.
Usually TQM is not targeted to a process or business. It is targeted to specific area/s.
There is no performance level in TQM. It has continually increased performance level.


Total Quality Management Six Sigma
People learn from total quality management. In Six Sigma black belt are well trained.
In TQM use many tools as possible. In it, use necessary tools.
Don’t worry about the bottom line. Each iteration of project is expected to meet with bottom line.

Changes just come in department. Can get good result when focuses on customer.
Changes because of TQM, is not urgently required. Just focuses on the business process/es.

Six Sigma Certification:

Six Sigma certification is a confirmation for a person that he has expertise in Six Sigma. A person can become Six Sigma certified from a training company or his organization may offer him. There are two sections to become a certified Six Sigma, first pass a written proficiency test, second display competency in a hands-on environment. The materials can be purchased from almost any Six Sigma training and consulting company, but almost always comes bundled with classroom training. Usually company purchases a training session, which has different bodies of knowledge and durations for each Six Sigma level (green belt, black belt, master black belt, sponsor, etc.).

After completing test, person must complete one or two quality projects and display his concept learnt in classroom. At this point some organization gives certificate according to displayed project, if one project than Green Belt and if two project then Black Belt or Master Black Belt. This rule is not standard; it varies from organization to organization.

Project Scope & Change Management

The product’s characteristics and features described the scope of a project, work that must be executed and delivered to the project objective as a product with specific features and functions. The processes of these areas of concern ensuring that the content and scope of the project has defined and any change can be controlled.

The processes in this field of knowledge dealing with the ongoing refinement of the description of what will be shipped in the project ever has. Before a project or a new phase of the project can start at all, it requires an initiation. Thus, it is the authorization of a new project or a new phase in a larger project. This authorization is done through the formal decision to start a project or to let it enter a new phase.

In the real world of projects, the project manager is often the first to determine the success with systematic project management. This often means that he or she is in the crucial initial phase of a project not yet “on board” and was subsequently completed (planning) to accept the facts and has to conduct. In the initiation, it should also be documented already, starting with what limitations and assumptions of the project. In many projects there are these limitations and assumptions only unspoken and undocumented. It is good when it is clear that under what conditions the project shall be carried out. For example, in an IT project there may be an assumption that a particular tool is necessary to develop a timely and reliable available. Such an assumption must be regularly reviewed in the course of the project on its continued validity. This process of initiation is part of the initiation process group.

The next processes in this field of knowledge consist of the ever more precise description of the goods delivered and services of the project.

This is the first rough description of the project from the initiation of a more detailed description of project content and scope created. This includes, among other things, the project justification, a description of the project product, a list of things and services that must be provided in the project and the project objectives. These objectives must be quantifiable in any case.
The WBS (work breakdown structure) refined this description when the main components will be further broken down. This breakdown should be conducted in such an extent that the components are planned. This work breakdown structure is of paramount importance. What is not defined in it, does not belong to the project. It is the basis for any further planning and also the benchmark for the verification of the results of the project. These processes of defining the scope and content belong to the group planning process.

The achievement of the agreed target as project content and scope to specific points in time must be regularly reviewed in the project. For every change of the content and scope, there must be a control system. It must be clear who should decide to change. This process of inspection and control are part of the process group. Thus lacking any predictability is either unclear or uncertain, which will affect the project.


Why Scope change??

There are number of reasons that cause change in scope, this Is necessary to understand not all changes are wish list, but some changes in scope are beneficial to get closer MOVs (measurable organization values), good practice is that always consider those changes that give value to organization, now if we compound those areas so we clearly identified that in which area we got change in scope.

Incapable project team is the measure cause of scope change; the reason is that if a team doesn’t understand the actual requirement, values of organization so the change in scope occurs.

Increasing features in a project may cause scope, cost, resource, time, this is important to understand that not every time project sponsor requesting features, a project team also perform same role in order to make project more interesting, give new ideas , so the result is that project team and sponsor divert to its actual need, and if both project team and sponsor move on that path the project failure rate increases, actually featurism is not given the value to organization and cause actual goals and objective.

And finally is that there is a concept of scope leaping, means often project team focus on different MOVs regardless on baseline MOVs, the result is that sponsor rethinking the current values of project, if the change is critical then sponsor initiates new values of a project, so this is also divert the focus of base line MOVs that has been discussed before project starts.

Change Control Procedure??

There should be proper way to control the scope change before the actual work started, and that changes will shared among all the stake holders, now this procedure will manage all request from sponsors or organization and make decision either this change will accept or reject. The change request is in proper format, for example a “Request Form”, and in that request form sponsor will define the enough description about changes that are easily understandable by project manager and project team, and secondly is that as a sponsor of project a scope changes are defensible, mean you have to mentioned what are the important of your organizational value regardless your main focus on featurism, and you must define several alternatives in order to assess the impact of scope (schedule, resources, and cost), after all these changes will approve and sign off from both sides including the project sponsor and project team as well , because the project base will have to be adjust accordingly, Alternative may including limiting functionalities on other areas, depending upon what sponsor will focuses on.

After scope changes approved there should be change request log, that include all the information regarding changes, this log protect project team as well, unfortunately introducing scope creep will impact the schedule and budget and interest rate of project team on a project, change control procedure helps project team to stay focused in a project.

The most important benefit of scope change control is that its keep project manager in control of the project, more specifically it’s allow project manager to control project schedule and budget.

An overview of CMMI

CMMI is a process improvement approach that provides organizations with the essential elements of effective processes that ultimately improve their performance. CMMI can be used to guide process improvement across a project, a division, or an entire organization. It helps integrate traditionally separate organizational functions, set process improvement goals and priorities, provide guidance for quality processes, and provide a point of reference for appraising current processes.


CMMI was developed by the CMMI project, which aimed to improve the usability of maturity models by integrating many different models into one framework. The project consisted of members of industry, government and the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute (SEI). The main sponsors included the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and the National Defense Industrial Association.

CMMI is the successor of the capability maturity model (CMM) or software CMM. The CMM was developed from 1987 until 1997. In 2002, CMMI Version 1.1 was released, Version 1.2 followed in August 2006, and Version 1.3 in October 2010.

Concept of CMMI:-

The CMMI provides a set of recommended practices that defines key process areas specific to software development.The objective of the CMMI is to offer guidance on how an organization can best control its processes for developing and maintaining software. In addition the CMMI provides a path for helping organizations evolve their current software process toward software engineering and management excellence.

To understand how the CMMI may support an organization,several concept must be defined.

· Software process

A set of activities,methods or practices and transformation used by people to develop and maintain software and the deliverables associated with software project.included are such things as projects plans,,design documents,code,test cases,user manuals,and so forth.

· Software process capability

The expected results that can be achieved by following a particular software process.More specifically,the capability of an organization’s software processes provides a way of prediciting the outcomes that can be expected if the same software processes are used from one software project to the next.

· Software process performance

The actual results that are achieved by following a particular software process.therefore,the actual results achieved through software process performance can be compared to the expected results achieved through software process capability.

· Software process maturity

The extent to which a particular software process is explicitly and consistently defined,managed,,measured,controlled,and effectively used throughout the organization.


CMMI defines five levels of process maturity each maturity,each requiring many small steps as a path of incremental and continuous process improvement.Maturity levels provide a well defined, evolutionary path for achieving a mature software process organizations. With the exception of level 1,each maturity level encompasses several key process areas that an organization must have in place in order to achieve a particular level of maturity. There are five levels of software process maturity.

Level 1:Initial:- The Initials level generally provides a starting point for many software organizations. This level is characterized by an immature software organization in which the software process is adhoc and often reactive to crises.

Level 2: Repeatable: At this level, basic policies,processes,and controls for managing a software project are in place.project schedules and budgets are more realistic because planning and managing new projects is based upon past experiences with similar projects.

Level 3:Defined :- At level 3,software engineering and management processes are documented and standardized throughout the organization and become the organization’s standard process.Activities ,roles and responsibilities are well defined and understood through the organization.

Level 4: Managed:- At this level quantitative metrics for measuring and assessing productivity and quality established for both software products and processes.This information is collected and stored in an organization-wide repository that can be used to analyze and evaluate software processes and products.The software process of software organizations at this level are charterized as being quantifiable and predictable because quantitative controls are in place to determine whether the process performs within operational limits.

Level 5: Optimizing:- At this highest level of software process maturity,the whole organization is focused on continuous process improvements.These improvements come about as a result of innovations using new technology and methods and incremental process improvements..
